Burntside Lake Map – St. Louis County – Minnesota
Burntside Lake is an incredible body of water. With more than 100 islands, and reaching depths of 160 feet, I'm not too proud to admit that I was intimidated by the scope of this map. The project initially started as a 10 layer map, but as I worked with the client, (Hi Astrid!) we decided this amazing lake deserved an equally incredible map. Feel free to take a moment to look at the intricate structure and layering, even though I have no connection to Burntside lake, I could stare at this map for hours.
When it was decided the map should be 23x23 inches, my curiosity got the best of me, and I decided to do the map in 10 foot layer increments, meaning the map would have 16 depth layers, plus top and bottom layers, bringing the total to 18 layers.
Not only has Burntside Lake been the map with the most layers to date, it has been my most intricate map thus far, with well over 200 pieces of structure glued in after the initial layer assembly, including 102 islands - some of the pieces are smaller than one half millimeter across - which is a new record for me.
